A crumble with a nutty, oaty topping over apples that are lifted with a little orange juice, baked as small individual pots or as one big dish.

Elle got the recipe from a friend who was a very good baker. Cooked with friends from the Keston Kitchen blog.

Variations and notes

Variations

Plain flour, butter and sugar alone make a good topping if you would rather skip the oats and nuts.

Try plum and ginger: put some ginger with the fruit and cut a little stem ginger finely into the topping.

Cooking apples are sour, so they need the extra sugar. Eating apples such as Cox's work without it.

If you like a thick crust, make double the topping.
